It’s no surprise that the hospitality industry has been severely impacted by COVID-19. With government restrictions and social distancing measures, foot-traffic has decreased significantly. COVID-19 has resulted in 10 years of behavioural change, in just a few short months. Experts are saying that the notion of “anti-consumerism” is very much on our doorstep.

As restrictions are starting to ease, it is important for businesses within the hospitality industry to consider their next steps - re-imaging their businesses, and aligning with the customers’ wants and needs within this COVIDSafe ‘New Normal’. Regaining customer confidence amidst these crazy times is a complicated process - and will be an ongoing endeavour, laid out in multiple steps.

The focus needs to be on: Safety.

Recent studies have shown that ‘safety’ has become a core component in attracting customers, and a business’ reputation. Society is witnessing a renewed focus on health, mandated by both the government and general consumer sentiment. The relationship between health and hospitality however does not need to be a ‘zero-sum game’ - you can still have both, and be in business. Here’s a few tricks to stay ‘COVIDSafe’:

  • Reconfigure physical spaces: table and chairs, floor markings to guide customers, door count procedures.

  • Hand sanitiser.

  • Frequent sanitation of public spaces.

  • Signage around your venue.

  • PR code to sign in - check out our article that outlines the essentials of COVID Record Keeping.

Adopt a “service mindset”.

In this time of social distancing, it’s imperative that consumers and businesses feel connected. We’re all in this together (literally). Adopt a “service mindset”, embracing the seemingly ordinary moments and heightening initial interactions with each and every person you serve. Studies have shown that how individuals influence and interact with people every day (colleagues, customers, teammates) is what matters most.
