Following its 2020 Annual Wage Review, the Fair Work Commission has announced a 1.75% increase to the minimum wage. According to FWC President, Iain Ross, in the midst of the COVID-19 Crisis and its damaging impacts on the economy, an increase in minimum wage was essential, as it will allow employees to better meet their needs.

This increase will be rolled out on different dates, and will depend on the Award group that you fall within. Most employees are covered by an award. If you are not sure which award applies to your business and your employees, use Find My Award

  • Group 1 - 1st July 2020: increase for employees in frontline and essential services (Health Care, Social Assistance, Teachers, Child Care etc), and anyone that isn’t covered by an award.

  • Group 2 - 1st November 2020: increase for employees that are covered by manufacturing and construction awards.

  • Group 3 - 1st February 2021: increase for employees working in accommodation, food, hospitality, retail, tourism and aviation.

Whilst 1st February 2021 seems like quite a while away for the hospitality industry, it is important for business owners across the country to be well aware of their legal obligations and expectations. This new increase in the minimum wage will also apply to those employees that are on JobKeeper. To find out more information visit this website
