Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras: What you need to know

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is here, making the streets of Sydney a lot more colourful until March 1! Given the increase in foot traffic around Sydney’s main streets - we all know it’s going to be a busy period for hospitality venues and businesses. Here’s what you and your staff need to know…

The main event is the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, which will be held on Saturday 29th February from 7:30pm to 11pm on Oxford and Flinders St in Darlinghurst.

This year will be welcoming 190 floats, 12,000 participants, and crowds in the thousands.

  • It’s also important to be aware of the Mardi Gras parties taking place all over the city. As Sydney has said goodbye to lockout laws, this year’s party will be going all night long (Queue Lionel Richie). The largest LGBTQI+ dance party in the Southern Hemisphere - the official Mardi Gras party, will be taking place from 10pm Saturday 29th February to 8am Sunday 1st March

The party will be at Hordern Pavilion and surrounding venues.

Our tips for this weekend:

  • If your hospitality/events business is based in the city, be aware of the road closures, and opt to catch public transport.

  • Major roads that will be closed from 5pm on Saturday will be Oxford St, Flinders St, Moore Park Rd, Anzac Pde, Liverpool St, College St and Wentworth Ave.

  • Allow extra time to get to and from work, due to the heavy crowds in the city.

  • Be prepared for a busier night than usual - hire local casual and temporary bartenders and waitstaff to lend a helping hand.
